I really need work bad

Desperation and neediness are most unattractive qualities.

People can detect it, they can sense of it, and even if they can’t, candidates continue to spell it out for their potential employers through their communication.

First of all, it starts with an insecure way of thinking about your current situation.

If you are heading into communication with a potential employer, networking, phone screen, interview, and you have thoughts of:

  • I need this job to feed my kids;
  • I need this position or I will lose my house;
  • I have interviewed so much and nobody is hiring;

This will also reflect in your outward communication, and it comes across in simple statements so I want you to be aware.

You might not notice your communication but hiring people do – when you have statements like:

  • I really need this job;
  • I don’t have enough money to pay tolls;
  • I can’t afford a baby sitter;
  • I have to borrow a car from my parents;
  • I make more on unemployment;
  • My unemployment is running out that is why I am looking;
  • More worried about the pay and start date then earning the position;
  • Talking about nobody hiring;
  • Conveying how bad your life is going, your search is going;

How do you make the shift internally to change your desperation into inspiration? You need to shift what you focus on and what importance you put on those items. You need to look at what you are capable of, what you have accomplished, all the things you have. You can do it. You have what it takes to get a new position.

You can shift your thinking to –

  • I am strong and confident and nothing will stop me from getting this job
  • My past doesn’t equal the future and today is a new day in my search for a new position
  • I talk health, happiness, and prosperity to everyone I meet

You need to dim down and eliminate the pictures in your head about all the things you feel desperate about. The fact that you have a mortgage, that you have kids to take care, that you have a car to put gas in, are items you can be grateful about, focus on the positive pieces and utilize those pictures to bring up a more positive outlook.

You can change your feelings and when you come across with a feeling of more confidence, security and well-being your outer presentation will reflect the same.

That's my clink of change in your cup. Now go out there and find out where your success works.

Knowing what you want

I am working with a friend of mine looking for work, and he brought a great question about his motivation for a new position.

And what I discovered, is that his list of items were “away” from items,

These were items that he didn’t want anymore.

The boss,

The work,

The ups and downs,

The meetings, etc.

I asked him what he really wants. And what we discovered is that he didn’t think through that part. He was looking so forward to get out, that he didn’t list what he wanted.

So we worked on his “Toward” list of items.

What does he want in his next position?

What will it look like?

What kind of size?

What would be his responsibilities?

What would excite him at his new position?

What thing could he learn or experience?

This changed his thoughts and looked back at a couple interviews he just went on and realized that he was just getting the same thing he has just in different clothing.

Sometimes a simple shift in your focus from Away to Towards can give you some direction on where you really want to go.

Don’t bite the hand that feeds you

So you finally get a job, you know it was a hard road to get that far!

You seem to be doing well, but all of a sudden; everything seems to be wrong about the job.

The job is too far

The pay isn’t good enough

The coworkers are mean

The boss is hard on me

The coffee machine is always broke,

To early, too late, too… too….. too………

Now this is the same job that you were all excited about a couple months ago. Now it isn’t what you expected? What has changed?

What I have found is this is internal dialogue you are having with yourself.

No one else knows any of this, and of course many won’t care, since this is what you signed up for.

They didn’t move farther, they are paying you what is promised. It really becomes your perception.

You continue to convince yourself how bad it is and one day quit. Or just don’t show up.

I guess somewhere in you head you figure, I will get them, this will fix them, they won’t be able to continue with out me. The reality is you only hurt yourself.

Now I have been the employer on some of these situations and the end result is that I would never employee that person again, or recommend this person.

There is a better way, and one of the first things you need to do is communicate your internal thoughts outward to someone that might be able to help. Walking around depressed, rolling eyes, huffing and puffing doesn’t count.

Also the threat approach doesn’t work either.

Let a supervisor know that you are having issues. I have coached people in this simple step of getting out of their own head and making a presentation, that they have received raises, new time slots, more responsibility, some time off, and some times they just got the relief that some one else knows and they stop , and work on something better.

Unsocial Media

As a hiring manager, I love social media, it saves me so much time and effort. I get see what your all about just by a click of a button or two.

I know what music you like, I know what you think of others and the world.

I know what types of people you hang out with, what types of groups your in, what sports teams you like, I know what type of language or slang you use.

This is great because my hallucination is that if this is you , the you portrayed to the world why would you be any different if I would hire you.

I am guessing you won’t.

Just by a few clicks, I can eliminate you from my choices, I can save myself time effort and money, in the interview process and also training and employment costs.

So when you post on your Facebook wall F*** working especially when everyone tries to be a boss its f****** bs f*** my boss and my job can’t wait to leave.

Or you’re my space has pictures of you with guns, and lyrics of killing everyone and that you think your girlfriend is a ho.

I thank you for helping me save time and effort on not hiring you.

So please make sure that the day you submit your resume that you have some ridiculous follow up on your social media to keep me from considering you.

This just helps me get to the right person faster.

Use of temps may no longer signal permanent hiring

Times are changing.

By Jeannine Aversa, AP Economics Writer , On Monday February 15, 2010, 10:56 am EST

WASHINGTON (AP) -- It's not the signal it used to be.

When employers hire temporary staff after a recession, it's long been seen as a sign they'll soon hire permanent workers.

Not these times.

Companies have hired more temps for four straight months. Yet they remain reluctant to make permanent hires because of doubts about the recovery's durability.

Even companies that are boosting production seem inclined to get by with their existing workers, plus temporary staff if necessary.

"I think temporary hiring is less useful a signal than it used to be," says John Silvia, chief economist at Wells Fargo. "Companies aren't testing the waters by turning to temporary firms. They just want part-time workers."

The reasons vary. But economists and business people say the main obstacle is that employers lack confidence that the economic rebound has staying power. Many fear their sales and the overall economy will remain weak or even falter as consumers spend cautiously.

Companies also worry about higher costs related to taxes or health care measures being weighed by Congress and statehouses. That's what Chris DeCapua, owner of employment firm Dawson Careers in Columbus, Ohio, is hearing from clients.

DeCapua says corporate demand for temporary workers has surged. That's especially true for manufacturing-related jobs involving driving forklifts, assembling products, packing merchandise and loading it on trucks.

Yet that demand hasn't spilled over into a demand for permanent workers. And DeCapua doesn't see it turning around anytime soon.

"There is so much uncertainty, and when there is uncertainty people and companies hold onto their checkbooks," DeCapua says.

Companies "don't want to hire permanent workers and then have to turn around and get rid of them six months later," he says.

DoubleStar Inc., a human resources firm based in West Chester, Penn., hired two temp workers recently to join its 60-person staff. CEO Harry Griendling says in normal times he would have hired two permanent employees.

But Griendling has doubts about the strength of the recovery. He's not ready to absorb the risk and cost of adding permanent workers.

"When I look ahead for the next three to four months, all I see is murkiness," Griendling says.

For years, economists have viewed the hiring of temp workers as a bridge between no hiring and healthy job creation. It meant that employers would soon expand their permanent payrolls to keep up with rising customer demand.

After the 1990-1991 recession, for instance, gains in temporary hiring starting in August 1991 led almost immediately to stepped-up permanent hiring. And after the 2001 recession, temporary hiring rose for three straight months in the summer of 2003. By September, employers were adding full-time jobs each month.

Now, because the recovery seems more tepid and fragile than previous rebounds, temporary hiring may have lost its predictive power, economists say.

"I think a lot of it is manufacturing," says Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Economy.com. "It may be that manufacturers are relying more on temps than in the past because they are more unsure about the ongoing demand for what they produce."

Employers added 52,000 temp jobs in January -- the fourth consecutive month of gains. Over that same time, total U.S. jobs shrank by 106,000. Employers have managed to squeeze more work out of their existing staffs.

For the unemployed, temporary jobs provide a paycheck at a time when the unemployment rate remains near double digits. Still, these jobs generally offer few or no benefits.

Some of the jobless see temporary work as providing a foothold at a desirable employer. Yet it seems far from certain these days that a temp job will lead to full-time work.

Allen Moore, 26, said a temporary job was all he could find last fall after more than six months of unemployment. Jobs disappeared last year around his hometown of Peoria, Ill., after manufacturer Caterpillar Inc. cut thousands of positions.

Moore landed a temporary job in September through a staffing agency. He preferred a permanent position. But he found none. He earns $9 an hour making pallets and boxes for FCA Manufacturing in nearby Princeville.

He said he took the job with the hope that he'd be hired as a permanent employee within about three months. The three months have come and gone.

Moore figures the company is waiting for orders to increase before it expands its long-term payroll.

"They think it's going to pick up," he says. "I hope it does."

My Dog Ate My Phone

Happy New Year to all. I am hoping that 2010 will bring new opportunities to us. More and more people are being unemployed, it is more important then ever to make sure you present yourself in the best light at all times.

My goal of mydogatemyresume is to give you real stories, so you can see the results and learn from others mistakes. You can avoid very simple, and common mistakes that are keeping you from getting and or keeping a position.

I want you to look at the stories from the employers point of view, and you might realize why it is keeping people from working.

My Dog Ate My Phone and I didn’t know who to call.

I received a call from one of my customers regarding one of my contracted employees. "Have you heard from him? He is not here." Which is followed by, "He is no longer employed."

If your not feeling well, or even if you are feeling well and don’t want to go to work, you might want to at least contact someone regarding. Most companies have policies on who to contact regarding.

I am curious on the thought process of the individual, who doesn’t call in and gives the excuse I didn’t know who to call.

Well, let us see, you have my number at Jobco, which leads to my cell phone, the number is on the web, in the phone book, 411, on your checks, on the paperwork you have. Maybe start there.

Or you could have called your supervisor, who had a group meeting regarding the call off procedures.

Or come up with a better excuse, like, "Oh, I had to fly out of the country last night…." We will talk about that one tomorrow.

Want to keep a job? Just think, not even out side the box!

Final thought, this person was considered for other positions in the company before this happened. Now they will not be considered at all with any position, in the corporation because he was terminated.

Dennis

Fired for Fantasy

Investment company to fantasy owners: 'You're fired'

By Andy Behrens

If you happen to be reading this sentence while sitting in your cubicle at Fidelity Investments, then you'd better stop. Immediately.

We cannot guarantee your safety. You're only one click away from creating a fantasy league, and that would be a serious violation of company policy. In fact, it's a fireable offense.

According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Fidelity recently axed four league commissioners in the Fantasy Purge of '09.

Cameron Pettigrew, who worked as a "relationship manager in a private client group" (which sounds a lot like the job description of a fantasy commish), was among those terminated:
"Firing a guy for being in a $20 fantasy league? Let’s be honest, that’s a complete overreaction," said Pettigrew, who lives in Grapevine and has an MBA from the University of Texas at Arlington. "In this economic time, especially. To fire people over something like this, it’s just cold."

That does seem cold. But multi-billion-dollar financial services corporations are not generally known for their warmth. Apparently there are anti-gambling rules in place at Fidelity. (Midcap funds, heck yeah! Football leagues, no).

Said Fidelity spokesman Vin Loporchio: "We have clear policies that relate to gambling. Participation in any form of gambling through the use of Fidelity time or equipment or any other company resource is prohibited. … We want our employees to be focused on our customers and clients."

They react to allegations of fantasy involvement swiftly, it seems.

[Pettigrew] said he never sent any fantasy football emails at work or using his work email address. But the investigators found two instant messages that had fantasy football-related material.

"One of my buddies sent me something about how bad Trent Edwards(notes) was playing or something like that," Pettigrew said. "So they called me in and talked to me for about 90 minutes on everything I ever knew about fantasy football."

Honestly, you can't fault his buddy's analytical talent. Edwards really was a disaster. If this blog contributed in any way to misplaced enthusiasm for any Buffalo Bills – which in turn led to ill-advised IMs, which resulted in firings – please accept our sincere apologies.

We would also like to point out – in our professional capacity as fantasy gurus, not as legal advisors – that laws have been passed which define the terms "bet" and "wager," and fantasy participation has been excluded. Here's a link to a million-word legal definition. Whatever else he did, Pettigrew wasn't gambling. Back off, company spokesman.

If Pettigrew actually owned Trent Edwards, then he's suffered enough. Someone please hire the man.

WHY WORK?

I called the Illinois Department of Employment Services, because I was curious on why I can’t find people to fill some of my entry level positions.

Well, I found out why.

I was informed that a person can receive up to $385. 00 a week and if you have dependants you can receive up to another $149.00 a week as well.

With the new extension that has just come out, you can potentially receive this amount of money for 99 weeks.

Not sure why they just didn’t make it an even 104 weeks so people know that they can sit on the couch for a full 2 years now.

So, you can receive $534.00 now these checks are coming with out taxes,(which at the end of the year you are supposed to pay), which means that you are receiving take home money equivalent to some one making around $33,000. And lets see, you didn’t have to drive , pay for gas, wear on your vehicle, sit in traffic, take a bus, buy a lunch, pay for parking, put up with a boss, or any other work hassles. So, that raises the value of your potential needs.

The worse part of this scenario is that many of the people that are on this program never made that much money in a years time.

Oh and lets not forget the other benefits I have heard of for not working. Child care, free phones, link cards, snap cards, health benefits.

In my coaching I work with people to get them back on their feet. I tell them they need to put in a full time effort in seeking a job. With my staffing company I have opportunities that can get them back working. But considering the alternative, why put in the effort to work?

Seems it might be better not to.

I’m sure if it gets any worse there will be soup and bread provided.

Reported by CNN.

The 4-week moving average for ongoing claims fell by 79,500 to 5,886,250.

But the slide may signal that more filers are dropping off those rolls into extended benefits.

Continuing claims reflect people filing each week after their initial claim until the end of their standard benefits, which usually last 26 weeks.

The figures do not include those who have moved to state or federal extensions, or people whose benefits have expired.

The Senate passed a bill Wednesday to extend unemployment benefits by up to 20 weeks. The legislation would lengthen benefits in all states by 14 weeks, and states with an unemployment rate higher than 8.5% would receive an additional six weeks.

Well I hope that people out there really want to be productive, provide for their family, and leave their mark on the world by producing or servicing in the workforce. What is your mindset, its up to you to pick a direction.
