R U Hiring

Guess I will have to learn to accept "R U Hiring?"

The Oxford English Dictionary on Thursday added abbreviations popularly used in electronic communication; including OMG and LOL, as part of the official lexicon.

These words or slang will join other entries of this sort such as IMHO (‘in my humble opinion’), TMI (‘too much information’) and BFF (‘best friends forever’) among others.

"The initialisms are quicker to type than the full forms, and in the case of text messages, or Twitter they help say more in media where there is a limit to a number of characters," Oxford English Dictionary said in a statement.

OMG is the abbreviation for Oh My God and LOL is Laugh Out Loud. For Your Information or FYI also joins ‘muffin top’ - referring to "a protuberance of flesh above the waistband of a tight pair of trousers."

Readers looking up the word "heart" will also find the symbol listed as an entirely new usage, as a verb meaning "to love" such as I (heart) New York.

The Oxford English Dictionary decided to add these words after its research revealed that the word ‘OMG’ was first used is a personal letter in 1917, while LOL was used way back in 1960 to denote an elderly woman or ‘little old lady’.

The research said that FYI had a common historical use, originating in the language of memoranda in 1941.

My Dog Ate My Phone

Happy New Year to all. I am hoping that 2010 will bring new opportunities to us. More and more people are being unemployed, it is more important then ever to make sure you present yourself in the best light at all times.

My goal of mydogatemyresume is to give you real stories, so you can see the results and learn from others mistakes. You can avoid very simple, and common mistakes that are keeping you from getting and or keeping a position.

I want you to look at the stories from the employers point of view, and you might realize why it is keeping people from working.

My Dog Ate My Phone and I didn’t know who to call.

I received a call from one of my customers regarding one of my contracted employees. "Have you heard from him? He is not here." Which is followed by, "He is no longer employed."

If your not feeling well, or even if you are feeling well and don’t want to go to work, you might want to at least contact someone regarding. Most companies have policies on who to contact regarding.

I am curious on the thought process of the individual, who doesn’t call in and gives the excuse I didn’t know who to call.

Well, let us see, you have my number at Jobco, which leads to my cell phone, the number is on the web, in the phone book, 411, on your checks, on the paperwork you have. Maybe start there.

Or you could have called your supervisor, who had a group meeting regarding the call off procedures.

Or come up with a better excuse, like, "Oh, I had to fly out of the country last night…." We will talk about that one tomorrow.

Want to keep a job? Just think, not even out side the box!

Final thought, this person was considered for other positions in the company before this happened. Now they will not be considered at all with any position, in the corporation because he was terminated.

Objective or Objection

An Objective is your goal or your purpose in getting new employment. This well meaning statement can be a hiring managers objection.

Even when you have it written generically, which I find a waste of resume space, there can be words or indications that create a picture for the hiring managers that you would

not be a fit for their environment
.

I just had a candidate that has the skills, and past employment would qualify him for this job, but he listed that he was interested in utilizing his skill “in a professional retail environment”. OBJECTION!

I know he would have fit but the manager felt his objective did not meet their objective.

Separate yourself, by making the hiring manager’s job easy

In these times, with unemployment rising, more and more people are applying for less and less available positions. One way you can separate yourself from the masses of people applying for the same position is to make the hiring manager’s job easy.

The more hoops a hiring manager needs to go through, the more likely it is that they will respond poorly to you, especially if you have similar or equal skills to other candidates applying to the same position.

Yes, we have a database of information. We probably have your resume. And when we send you an email asking for more qualifications, it is up to you to help clarify the information and to included it in your response. This is your job to clarify in your email, verbal response, and even in the interview.

I have heard responses for information come back to me with, “Well, it is on my resume” Basically, they are telling me, “Duh didn’t you see it? I wrote it.” And I think, “Why are you wasting my time.”

Here is a response to an email for a job posting we had.

“I love to be considered for this job. I think, I am qualified for the job. I have attached my resume and will like a response on what is the next step.”

The problem with this, he had not a single skill that matched the specifications for the position.

I also received a call this morning from someone referred my way. She wanted me to call her and tell her about the open positions. She might want consider this approach. She could have asked me to contact her to see if she is qualified.

This might seem small, but what makes a makes a great first impression is a person that wants to present their skills and desire to work. Versus me having contact them, to tell them what I have available.

So how can you make it easier?

Be responsive – respond quickly to a request for information, even it your not interested in the job.
Be kind – We get many resumes, so understand that you are one of many and leave messages or talk in a respectful manner.
Be giving - Make sure you give the information requested, do not make us look it up.
Be interested – So interested that you want to earn the job, not have it given to you.
