The paper is not the person

Well, you might have read my blog from a couple weeks ago of us reflecting a resume that was almost completely phonically written.

With a bit of tweaking and improvement on the resume, (thank you Kim), that person is working for me right now. He is doing a good job and is now enhancing his life.

It was his paper, not him, holding him back.

It's Monday choose to be inspired

This video is a from my client, Walgreens.

In my line of work, it becomes easy to focus on the people that don't seem to want to work or make the effort, however, I have seen so many people that I have employed get that opportunity and make a difference.

This is just a reminder of people wanting that opportunity, and getting it.

Tis my attempt as poetry

Thirty days hath September,

April, June, and November;

All the rest have thirty-one,

Save February, with twenty-eight days clear,

And twenty-nine each leap year.

I am trying to find a nice way to make up a poem so people can remember what they have schedules so they know in advance to tell their employer that they will not be able to work.

Like Monday through Friday is my days to work, If I take off I might look like a jerk. (How's that?)

I been out of work for such a long time, and now I have found a job, I think it’s a good time for me to call off and get my car worked on, (the day they want me to start)

Doctor, doctor can you see me, I'm sick! "No I can’t unless your recently employed, then my door is open to you anytime so come on in!"

Calendar excuses for going to work..."Oh I forgot..."

Oh I forgot that my car needs a fixing,

Oh I forgot that my hair needs a trimming,

Oh I forgot that I had a to see a doctor, a dentist, or a pharmacist,

Oh I forgot that kids don’t have school,

Oh I forgot that the alarm needed setting,

Oh I bet they won't need me today, I am betting!

Oh I forgot that telling you in advance might be helpful so I sent you an email,

I wonder why I continue to fail.

Don’t bite the hand that feeds you

So you finally get a job, you know it was a hard road to get that far!

You seem to be doing well, but all of a sudden; everything seems to be wrong about the job.

The job is too far

The pay isn’t good enough

The coworkers are mean

The boss is hard on me

The coffee machine is always broke,

To early, too late, too… too….. too………

Now this is the same job that you were all excited about a couple months ago. Now it isn’t what you expected? What has changed?

What I have found is this is internal dialogue you are having with yourself.

No one else knows any of this, and of course many won’t care, since this is what you signed up for.

They didn’t move farther, they are paying you what is promised. It really becomes your perception.

You continue to convince yourself how bad it is and one day quit. Or just don’t show up.

I guess somewhere in you head you figure, I will get them, this will fix them, they won’t be able to continue with out me. The reality is you only hurt yourself.

Now I have been the employer on some of these situations and the end result is that I would never employee that person again, or recommend this person.

There is a better way, and one of the first things you need to do is communicate your internal thoughts outward to someone that might be able to help. Walking around depressed, rolling eyes, huffing and puffing doesn’t count.

Also the threat approach doesn’t work either.

Let a supervisor know that you are having issues. I have coached people in this simple step of getting out of their own head and making a presentation, that they have received raises, new time slots, more responsibility, some time off, and some times they just got the relief that some one else knows and they stop , and work on something better.

Unsocial Media

As a hiring manager, I love social media, it saves me so much time and effort. I get see what your all about just by a click of a button or two.

I know what music you like, I know what you think of others and the world.

I know what types of people you hang out with, what types of groups your in, what sports teams you like, I know what type of language or slang you use.

This is great because my hallucination is that if this is you , the you portrayed to the world why would you be any different if I would hire you.

I am guessing you won’t.

Just by a few clicks, I can eliminate you from my choices, I can save myself time effort and money, in the interview process and also training and employment costs.

So when you post on your Facebook wall F*** working especially when everyone tries to be a boss its f****** bs f*** my boss and my job can’t wait to leave.

Or you’re my space has pictures of you with guns, and lyrics of killing everyone and that you think your girlfriend is a ho.

I thank you for helping me save time and effort on not hiring you.

So please make sure that the day you submit your resume that you have some ridiculous follow up on your social media to keep me from considering you.

This just helps me get to the right person faster.

Objective or Objection

An Objective is your goal or your purpose in getting new employment. This well meaning statement can be a hiring managers objection.

Even when you have it written generically, which I find a waste of resume space, there can be words or indications that create a picture for the hiring managers that you would

not be a fit for their environment.

I just had a candidate that has the skills, and past employment would qualify him for this job, but he listed that he was interested in utilizing his skill “in a professional retail environment”. OBJECTION!

I know he would have fit but the manager felt his objective did not meet their objective.
