I am working with a friend of mine looking for work, and he brought a great question about his motivation for a new position.
And what I discovered, is that his list of items were “away” from items,
These were items that he didn’t want anymore.
The boss,
The work,
The ups and downs,
The meetings, etc.
I asked him what he really wants. And what we discovered is that he didn’t think through that part. He was looking so forward to get out, that he didn’t list what he wanted.
So we worked on his “Toward” list of items.
What does he want in his next position?
What will it look like?
What kind of size?
What would be his responsibilities?
What would excite him at his new position?
What thing could he learn or experience?
This changed his thoughts and looked back at a couple interviews he just went on and realized that he was just getting the same thing he has just in different clothing.
Sometimes a simple shift in your focus from Away to Towards can give you some direction on where you really want to go.
